Perry is the child of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first roles on television were two appearances in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mother. However, her parents did not let her perform until she reached the age of adulthood due to the negative effects that stress could have on their daughter. Perry states that she did not want to perform in high school but decided to take up playing as a way to make friends at Northwestern University when she switched to the university from Boston University. Perry was able to land minor TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent following her graduation. The feeling of homelessness, however, brought her back to California and she returned working on stage. Perry performed with her mom on stage in The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie, along with Kevin McKidd. This was staged in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry played a lead role in the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on the ABC drama The Family. Her father portrayed her in The ABC Drama Scandal. She played the role of the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. The part was offered by audition regardless of the fact that she is a relative with the role.
